Application:
Trimethylaluminium has important applications in organic catalytic chemistry, organic synthesis and polymer chemical industry.
Trimethylaluminium reacts with appropriate forms of water to form highly active trimethylaluminoxane (MAO), and MAO is one of the most important promoters in metallocene catalytic system. Its greatest use is to form coordination catalysts, such as catalytic systems with halides of titanium, zirconium and hafnium, which can enable stereotactic polymerization, copolymerization and oligomerization of olefins, and transition metal elements such as nickel and cobalt. The catalyst composed of compounds can make olefins oligomerize, disproportionate and isomerize. In addition, trimethylaluminium itself can also be used to catalyze the reaction.
TMA can oligomerize with ethylene to produce high-carbon alkyl aluminium, which is oxidized and hydrolyzed to form straight-chain higher primary alcohols and higher a-olefins. Organic aluminium is not only inexpensive, but also highly reactive. Therefore, organic aluminium is often used to prepare other organometallic compounds, such as methyl tin by the reaction of TMA with stannic chloride. TMA can also be used as a mild reducing agent for the synthesis of high stereoselectivity reagents, vitamins, hormones and other drugs. In recent years, the formation of metal films is realized by chemical vapor deposition of organometallic compounds. If TMA is carried in hydrogen, a metal-aluminium film can be formed by thermal decomposition on the heated substrate.
In the aerospace industry, trimethylaluminium can be used as liquid fuel for rockets. TMA can also be used as an important alkylation reagent in fine organic synthesis chemical industry.
